Ripstop was born out of necessity during World War II. The military needed a replacement for silk parachutes—something stronger and more dependable. Engineers solved the problem by weaving thicker reinforcement threads into the fabric in a crosshatch pattern. The result wasn't tear-proof, but it stopped small tears from becoming catastrophic rips. Eighty years later, it's still one of the smartest fabric innovations ever developed.
