Ripstop's roots trace to World War II, when the U.S. military needed a stronger, more dependable replacement for the silk used in parachutes. The solution was simple and smart: weave thicker reinforcement threads into the cloth in a crosshatch grid.
That reinforced grid helps contain a small snag or tear before it spreads into a much bigger problem.
More than 80 years later, the same idea still works. We put that reinforced grid into a lighter 6.5 oz. fabric for the Platoon Overshirt and a more substantial 10 oz. fabric for the Quartermaster Short and Commander Pant.

The Commander and Quartermaster begin with USA-woven 10 oz. cotton ripstop. The Platoon's lighter 6.5 oz. fabric is dyed, preshrunk and finished here. All three styles are cut and sewn in the USA.
The components are American made, too: thread and buttons throughout, plus American-made zippers in the Commander and Quartermaster.
We make them in small batches at American sewing houses where skilled artisans still take their work personally. Then we back every piece with our Devium Lifelong Guarantee. If something goes wrong that shouldn't have, we make it right.

RIPSTOP FAQ
What is ripstop fabric?
Ripstop is reinforced with thicker threads woven into the cloth at regular intervals. Those threads create the small crosshatch grid you can see in the fabric and help contain damage within a smaller area.
Is ripstop always made from nylon?
Ripstop describes the reinforced grid woven into the cloth, not the fiber itself. Every style in this collection is made from 100% cotton ripstop.
Is Devium ripstop waterproof?
These are uncoated 100% cotton ripstop fabrics built for everyday wear, not rainwear. The reinforced grid helps contain small tears; waterproofing is a separate treatment.
Is ripstop tear-proof?
The reinforced grid is designed to help contain a small snag or tear before it spreads across the fabric. Like any cotton cloth, it can still be cut, snagged or torn.
What is the difference between the three styles?
The Platoon is a lighter 6.5 oz. overshirt. The Quartermaster is a substantial 10 oz. short cut just above the knee. The Commander is a full-length 10 oz. pant with a classic straight leg.
Do the Commander and Quartermaster use the same fabric and fit?
Yes. Both use the exact same 10 oz. USA-woven 100% cotton ripstop and share the same fit through the waist, rise and seat. Choose the same waist size in both.
Will the Ripstop Collection shrink?
All three styles are prewashed and preshrunk. Expect very minimal shrinkage when you machine wash cold and tumble dry low or hang to dry.
Are the Commander and Quartermaster one-time limited editions?
Not necessarily. They are produced in small batches and may be restocked after a run sells through. However, a future restock is never guaranteed.
What happens if my size sells out?
Choose “Notify Me When It's Back” on the product page. If another small batch is scheduled, we'll let you know when your size returns.
What does the Devium Lifelong Guarantee cover?
It covers manufacturing defects and premature failures, including hardware failures, sewing errors and premature fabric failure unrelated to cuts, abrasion or snagging. Contact us with photos and your order information, and we'll work to make it right.
