Description

Our newest Grafton Heavyweight T-shirt is a throwback to the legendary America-made beefy tees of the '80s and ’90s—the hefty cotton, sturdy collar and unapologetically solid hand that made them everyday heroes.

For this update, we worked with our trusted California knit factory, and one of their favorite North Carolina cotton farmers, to develop an even better 8.8 oz. 100% combed cotton jersey. The knit is dense, and has that unmistakable manly feel that tells your brain this shirt can take a beating.

We perfected the old-school bound collar to hold its shape for years to come. No stretched-out neck. No bacon collar. And each pigment garment-dyed tee is offered in three unique colors we know you’ll wear everywhere.

We won’t beat around the bush. These 100% American-made heavyweight T-shirts aren’t cheap. But the shirt you reach for multiple times a week, season after season, has a funny way of making the math work. Even when you buy all three.

Fit & Care
  • Don't overthink it. If you're usually a medium, order a medium. If you're between sizes, go with the smaller size unless you like your shirts baggy.
  • Machine wash cool or cold water. Tumble dry low. Hang dry to maximize lifespan. Don't screw this up!

Grafton Heavyweight Tee - FAQs

1) Is the Grafton Heavyweight Tee 100% Made in the USA?

Yes, the Grafton Heavyweight Tee is 100% American-made. Truckee, California designed, North Carolina grown 100% cotton, California textile mill, North Carolina thread, North Carolina labels, California wash and dye house, California cut and sew.

2) How does a heavyweight tee fit differently than a standard tee?

One of the pleasures of a truly heavyweight tee is the way it hangs. Lightweight jersey tends to follow whatever is underneath it. The Grafton’s dense 8.8 oz. cotton has enough structure to make its own line—hanging from the shoulders, falling cleanly through the body.

3) I'm new to heavyweight T-shirts. How do I find my right size

Trust your instincts. Go look in your closet - mostly mediums? Perfect. Order a medium. These are true to size.

4) Will the Grafton heavyweight T-shirt shrink in the wash?

The Grafton men’s heavyweight tee has been hot-washed and dried twice – once at the fabric level, and again after garment dyeing. Our tests show that the Grafton will shrink very little after home wash, and will stay true to size.

5) How should I wash and care for a shirt like the Grafton Heavyweight Tee?

Wash with like colors in cold or cool water. Tumble dry low or hang dry for maximum lifespan. Don’t screw this up!

6) How heavy is an 8.8 oz. T-shirt like the Grafton?

At 8.8 oz. per square yard, the Grafton sits in the “substantial” category against most other heavyweight tees. The original benchmark—the Hanes Beefy-T (now imported) —has long lived around 6 oz., while many of today’s heavyweight tees fall somewhere between 6 and 8 oz. At 8.8 oz., the Grafton has noticeably more density, structure and backbone than even most shirts carrying the heavyweight label.

That extra weight gives the Grafton a denser, more structured feel. It drapes differently, feels more substantial in the hand, and is far less prone to the thin, clingy feel of a lightweight tee.

7) Is an 8.8 oz. heavyweight tee too hot for summer?

Not necessarily. Plenty of our customers wear their Graftons year-round because they like the way this shirt fits them. Fabric weight and warmth aren’t quite the same thing. The Grafton is still 100% cotton jersey, so it breathes, but its dense knit has more body and holds more heat than a lightweight summer tee. The upside is that it hangs cleanly, keeps its shape and doesn’t cling when the temperature starts climbing.

For most days, and anything short of serious heat, it works just fine on its own. When it’s 95 degrees, humid and you’re standing in direct sun, our Sidewalk Tee might be the better choice.

8) What is pigment garment dyeing, and why does the Grafton look different from a regular dyed T-shirt?

Unlike conventional reactive dye, which penetrates more deeply into the cotton fiber, pigment dye sits primarily on the surface. That creates the subtle highs and lows you see across seams, edges and other high-contact areas.

It also means the color keeps evolving. With every wash and wear, the pigment gradually fades, softens and develops more personality—more like a well-worn pair of jeans than a flat, uniform T-shirt.

Pigment dyeing is an art. And our shirts are dyed by some of the best dye artisans in the USA. That’s why no two Graftons will age exactly the same. The shirt starts with character, then you add the rest.

9) Will a pigment-dyed T-shirt fade over time?

Yes. A pigment-dyed T-shirt is supposed to lightly fade over time. That’s part of what makes it special.

Pigment dye sits primarily on the surface of the cotton rather than penetrating deeply into the fiber. With wear and washing, some of that pigment gradually wears away—especially along seams, edges and other high-contact areas. The result is a softer, more nuanced color with the kind of highs, lows and patina you see in a well-worn pair of jeans.

The Grafton is designed to age this way. Your shirt should look better at year three than it did on day one—and no two will end up exactly alike.

If you absolutely love the color out of the box and want to slow the process, wash it cold, inside out, with like colors and use a mild detergent. Never use bleach.  If you want more fade and character, regular washing and wearing will take care of that. The fading isn’t a flaw. It’s the point.

10) Why does an American-made heavyweight T-shirt cost more?

A heavyweight Made in USA tee costs more because nearly every part of it costs more to make.

The Grafton starts with a dense American grown 8.8 oz. cotton jersey that uses significantly more yarn than a standard lightweight tee. We then hot-wash and dry the fabric to reduce future shrinkage, hot-wash and shrink it again after cutting and sewing, then garment-dye the finished shirt for deeper, more dimensional color. All this takes place in the USA, with American materials and American craftsmen.

Add together heavier fabric, more steps, smaller production runs and American wages, and you end up with a T-shirt that simply costs more to build.

The tradeoff is a shirt with more structure, better durability and a fabric that is designed to soften, fade and improve with years (not months) of wear. The math (and ROI) works.

Tell me more about this “power of American Made quality”?
We’re on a quest to rebuild the small businesses in our country’s apparel supply chain – one Made in the USA garment at a time. Our handpicked partners, from New Jersey to California, manufacture the highest quality materials and carefully stitch your next garment, and by proactively partnering with them we have a hand in rebuilding these legacy (and often multigenerational family owned) entrepreneurial small businesses. Our partners stand behind their USA made fabrics and trims (from waxed canvas and North Carolina grown cotton jersey, to specialty inner facings, zippers, buttons, grommets, labels and even thread), our boutique sewing houses stand by their craftsmanship to put these all together, and we stand behind them. It’s a virtuous circle, and we want to thank you for considering whether you will take the leap and be part of the 100% American Made Movement!
Most Guarantees seem to be a lot more words, with many of them being exceptions. Yours isn’t that. Why is that?
See the term “virtuous circle” above. We believe that more Good People will choose to join our 100% American Made Movement and become Devium diehards. And that these Good People will be like minded, and won’t try to “game the system” when it comes to our Lifelong Guarantee. We’ll treat you like family (the good kind of families) and Make It Right. We’ve got you covered.
